Frank specialties by Dwarf_severity
"FRENCH CIV SPECIALTY BY SEV" I love the French simply because the ROCK!! The team bonus has a +2 line of sight for all knights! Therefore you can see those piken men "coming from a mile away!" :) The French bonuses also include -25% castle cost!! Therefore less stone is needed for that first castle when you want to build it next to the enemies TC - hehe. The french knights also get +20 HP so 1 kight without any upgrades will take out 1 enemy knight, np. :p The other French bonus I think is sooo cool is the economy bonus - FREE FARM UPGRADES. :) When played well, French Paladins can be very devastating! The important thing to remember is castling ASAP and build 1-4 cavs to raid the enemy base. This way, the enemy is forced into defense and leaves your economy alone! If this works, then imping asap is a good idea with a very very strong economy!! The upgrade from knight to cavalier costs 300 food and 300 gold. Keep in mind that this is ONLY POSSIBLE after reaching the imperial age. So try not to build too much military. Just enough to keep you protected and the enemy worrired - hehe (this strat sometimes backfires, but when it works, chances are you will be reaching imperial age before anyone else.) *** If you are being attacked by heavy troops, then my suggestion is wait on imping and build a strong enough army to defend yourself !!! Otherwise, go ahead and imp!! After getting the cavalier upgrade, I usually don't attack in mass, just raids still. :) My suggestion would be to concentrate your economy for another 1300 food and 750 gold! Personally, I would rather have the Paladin upgrade then a bunch of unnecesary upgrades. The Paladin usually gets 160 HP. But the French Paladin gets another 20% to put them at 192. :) *** If your cavs are getting hastled by pikes, then you need support from a distance with ranged attack! As I see it, you have 2 options, either Axemen (created inside the castle) or raid the enemy base and then retreat to a foward TC with a whole bunch of vills and pikes garrisoned inside!! *** Having a few pikes yourself can also be worth while!! Reason being, they take care of those nasty camels (which horsies don't particularly care for. :) *** While playing the French civ, don't bother with the archer armour upgrades until you can afford it (and have everything in complete control). The only reason I would even consider the armour upgrades is if my axemen won't make the grade. Axemen have a range of only 3 (without upgrades). If you are in the imperial age and need more range for "defending your French Paladins" then research chemistry in the university and subsequently hand cannoneers in the archery range (as they start with a range of 7). Although keep in mind, French Axemen cost 55F, 25G. And they benefit from the infantry armour upgrades that you researched for your pikes! Where as Hand Cannoneers cost 45F, 50G!! Personally, I would rather use the gold for more Paladins. While everyone has their own unique style of play, I like to attack in "raid fashion." I use French Paladins to knock out the enemy vills and houses, then a temporary retreat to 4-5 monks (as they can heal your 1st battalion of Paladins while your 2nd battalion continues with the raids taking out any and all resistance!) :) *** It is important to use trebs to take out enemy Castles and TCs when possible. My suggestion would be to build a TC about 15 units away from an enemy castle (for arrow support against those nasty camels and pikes). Then use your "wounded battalion" for treb protection. Keep continuing with the raids, and whamo!! Enemy destroyed. :) I hope you enjoyed "my take" on the French civ. :) Stay tuned folks ...same bat time.... same bat channel.... for the next "Civ specialty by Sev!!!" :)
